Visayas, Mindanao supply pork to Luzon

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said it is working on increasing the supply of pork to address high pork prices in the markets of Metro Manila and other areas of Luzon.

DA Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista said pork supply from the Visayas and Mindanao will continuously flow to Luzon. “Because of the law of supply and demand, if the supply is low, definitely there will be a movement in prices.

This is the reason why we see high prices of pork,” she said. She said they are coordinating with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) to check on the inventory status of hogs and frozen to determine if there really is enough supply for Luzon.

“This will also help and guide us if the price point of our traders is correct, which in turn is passed on to our vendors,” she said. Evangelista noted that the African swine fever (ASF) and the COVID-19 pandemic have affected the livestock industry which contributed to the low supply.
