DOTr, Labella to implement BRT: Rama

THE ball game in the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in now in the hands of major players which are the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Cebu City Government executive department after it passed the Cebu City Council.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael “Mike” Rama said that he does not know the involvement of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in this project.

“I wish that they will not forget the original routes, original concepts that BRT is not for the rich but for the poor people,” Rama said.

During the time of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, the Philippine Government through DOTr has obtained a foreign loan in the amount of P10 billion of which the government is continuously paying interests.

However, the Aquino administration has involved the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) considering that it owned national highways, and the Cebu City Government to help the acquisition of roadright-of-ways.

The original BRT routes are from Bulacao, Cebu City, which is a boundary of Bulacao, Talisay City passing Natalio Bacalso Avenue to corner Osmeña Boulevard near Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), from BSP passing Osmeña Boulevard to corner Escario Street infront of Cebu Capitol, from Cebu Capitol passing Escario Street to corner Gov. M. Cuenco under the flyover at Cebu Business Park, from Cebu Business Park to Talamban passing Tinder Box, Gaisano Country Mall, among others.

But the implementation of the project was not realized until now because some influential people in the President Rodrigo Duterte administration whose businesses are affected wanted to divert it up to IT Park only.

Rama said the original routes and original concept must be followed because this mass transport is for all people, most especially to the poor. ELIAS O. BAQUERO
