Local farmers urged to plant more vegies

REGIONAL Executive Director Joel Elumba of the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas (DA-7) has encouraged farmers to produce more vegetables since local supply, especially in Cebu City, cannot meet the local demand.

“Kulang ang atoang local production. Ang atong supply sa utanon naggikan pa sa Mindanao,” Elumba said during the recent turnover of a greenhouse facility. The P1.7-million greenhouse facility, funded under the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) of DA-7, was turned over to the Napayran United Farmers Association (NUFA) in Sudlon I, Cebu City.

Aside from the greenhouse facility, the city agriculture also distributed assorted vegetables like lettuce, pechay, cabbage, carrots, among others. Elumba campaigned for organic farming to help cope with the high cost of inorganic fertilizers. Elumba turned over the facility to City Agriculturist Joelito Baclayon and NUFA President Narciso Ragodos.

Meanwhile, 51 rice farmers from Barangay Anapog, Pinamungahan, Cebu finished the 18-week (4 months) Season-long Farmers Field School on Climate Resiliency Farm Business School conducted by the Rice Program of the Department of Agriculture-Central Visayas in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Pinamungajan.

Provincial Rice Coordinator Joseph Dela Cerna said that age is not a hindrance to continue learning, most especially on new farming technologies, since learning is a continuous process and across time there are changes or upgraded technologies. FREEMAN
