LEADERS of the GMO-Free Negros Coalition have expressed strong opposition to a proposed ordinance.
The measure would allow genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) to be researched, developed and potentially commercialized in Negros Occidental.
The coalition asserted that the province must remain a GMO-free zone, citing risks to farmers, ecosystems and future generations.
The group is composed of Negrense farmers, organic agriculture advocates, indigenous people's organizations, civil society groups, church leaders, scientists, consumers and members of the academe.
