IT is commendable on the part of Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla to decide to lift restrictions on the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALNs) of all public leaders particularly those holding high government positions.
During former Ombudsman Samuel Martires' term, he ordered that SALNs be restricted or not made known for public consumption. We were confused why.
Now, SALNs of public officials can already be reported out or revealed in instances they are needed for scrutiny. And all Filipino citizens have every right to know regarding this matter.
Through the SALNs of public officials, the ordinary Pinoy would know the value of each official by his/her economic status or assets owned or lifestyle maintained.
Government officials that have nothing to hide should not be scared to reveal their SALNs. It is very basic and important for the sake of transparency and accountability.
