SHOULD E-BIKES BE BANNED?

The rapid proliferation of electric bicycles and tricycles (e-bikes and e-trikes) has significantly transformed urban transportation, providing an economical and environmentally sustainable option for many users. While these modes of transport are garnering popularity due to their convenience and cost-effectiveness, they are also contributing to challenges on major thoroughfares. Concerns regarding safety and traffic management have prompted government proposals to prohibit these vehicles from busy roads, effective December 1, 2025.

While prioritizing safety is undeniably important, it is imperative to consider the low-income individuals who rely on e-bikes and e-trikes for their daily commutes. For numerous individuals, these vehicles serve not merely as trendy novelties but as essential tools for accessing employment and supporting their families. Instituting a ban on major roads may adversely impact the economy by restricting access to job opportunities and exacerbating hardships for those already facing financial difficulties.

Rather than imposing an outright ban, it may be prudent to invest in improved infrastructure and establish clearer regulations. Striking a balance between ensuring road safety and safeguarding the livelihoods of those dependent on e-bikes and e-trikes is essential. Ultimately, enhancing the safety of our streets should not come at the expense of making life more challenging for individuals who are striving to make ends meet.
