DRESS CODE AT BASILICA: DOUBLE STANDARD?
WHEN a lady senator came to Cebu City for the wedding of her son to a Cebuana, she dropped by the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño to attend Mass. Such a nice gesture of displaying her faith in the Holy Child.
But what made her act assailable was her coming to the Basilica in a sleeveless getup. In fairness, she may not have been informed ahead that the Basilica has strict rules against the wearing of sleeveless outfits.
Why was she allowed to enter the Basilica when her outfit violated the policy imposed by the Augustinian priests that are managing the place of worship?
The security guards assigned at the entrance should not have allowed the senator to enter the premises in order to be consistent with the policy on the dress code.
The policy should be fairly applied to all, rich or poor, known or unknown, senator or not. It is very unfair if the Basilica security personnel and the priests that employ them practice the selective manner of allowing people to enter the premises.
Because of the incident, many are suggesting that they better do away with the dress code and simply allow churchgoers enter the Basilica freely, especially foreign tourists that normally come in a pair of slippers, a pair of shorts and sleeveless shirts.
What's the use of imposing a dress code when it is selective in the first place?
