THE Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People's Participation is currently tackling three anti-political dynasty bills filed by Sen. Francis Pangilinan (bill #285), Sen. Panfilo Lacson (bill #035) and Sen. Robinhood Padilla (bill #018).
Will the entire Senate pass a unified anti-political dynasty bill?
Let's recall that the present Constitution was crafted and passed 38 years ago and a unified anti-political dynasty bill has not been approved since.
Just recently, Sen. Erwin Tulfo -- who has a brother also in the Senate -- remarked that approving the initiative is next to impossible.
So there.
Again, do you think our national legislators are willing to give the measure the green light? We don't think so.
Because, as they say in Cebuano, "maunay sila sa tari" once they pass the measure.
Remember that some politicians have direct blood relatives that may run in future elections -- and an approved anti-political dynasty bill could definitely jeopardize their goal of running for reelection or for a different seat or position.
When the sitting President stressed that the bill should be treated as one of the priority bills in the Senate, many suspect he was merely bluffing.
Could be a form of a warning addressed to his sister Imee for her not to run for vice president in 2028 in favor of her nephew Sandro who may run for reelection or for senator.
As it is, the entire nation is eagerly waiting for the Senate to wrap up its discussion regarding the anti-political dynasty bill.
Pass it?
Easier said than done.
