Red-Tagging: When Accusation Replaces Due Process

The persistent practice of labeling individuals as security threats without judicial process erodes legal foundations and endangers lives, presenting a profound civic challenge.

This phenomenon operates outside courtrooms, yet its effects are brutally real. "Red-tagging" leverages state-associated authority to cast suspicion, effectively trying individuals in the court of public opinion and, too often, inciting real-world threats. It represents a direct shortcut around the constitutional guarantees of due process and the presumption of innocence. For the legal system, it creates a paralegal reality; for the public, it fosters an environment of fear where legitimate dissent and civic engagement become perilous. Addressing it requires not just political will

but a societal recommitment to the principle that accusation alone is never synonymous with guilt.

Mindfulness here means developing a critical filter for public accusations. Be wary of narratives that condemn without evidence or due process. The citizen ten steps ahead understands that the strength of our democracy relies on protecting the rights of all, even those we disagree with, and views the erosion of due process as a threat to everyone's security.
